World Water Day is held annually on March 22nd as a means to highlight the importance of freshwater. In 2022, the theme of the year is “Groundwater: Making the invisible visible”.
Water means everything to us. Humans, animals, plants – we all depend on water. 2/3 of us is water – that means 99% of the molecules of human body are water molecules, since water molecules are really small. We are basically blobs of water walking around!
You might think that since water is so common we would understand it and it’s features well, too. But that’s not the case.
No liquid behaves as oddly as water. Such as, how the water in lakes freezes from top to bottom. When most things freeze they get more dense, since molecules are able to pack more closely, but water is different. Water gets less dense when it freezes. Lucky for us, it behaves that way. If it wouldn’t lakes would freeze and there would be no life for example here in Finland where I live.
It seems that understanding of the true nature of water means to reach far beyond the chemical understanding of it. I will continue my studies and writing. This is so interesting…
